Founded in early 2005, StratiCELL is a leading company assisting the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and chemical industries to the safety and efficacy evaluation of their actives and products by means of in vitro models and methods in a GLP-compliant environment.
StratiCELL is a skin model manufacturer and a project-driven services provider for in vitro testing, with a particular emphasis on testing of skin care actives and products
Sun Protection
Ultraviolet radiations can lead to photodamage causing long-term consequences as photoaging and photocarcinogenesis. In response to UV a battery of biological activities in the skin are switched-on in order to protect the body. In vitro, UV-exposure of skin biopsies or reconstituted epidermis leads to similar biological responses. StratiCELL proposes endpoints to evaluate a photo-protective or a photo-repairing effect of a skin care substance. . |

In vitro biological endpoints for Sun Protection
- Quantification of DNA damage (Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimers, CPDs)
- Response to stress (activity of p53, heat shock proteins, stress-associated protein kinases)
- Apoptosis (measuring the caspase-3 activity, TUNEL, and the formation of sunburn cells)
- Skin Inflammation
- Gene expression profiling
Skin biology processes after sun exposure

Labeling of Sun Burn Cells, DNA damage (Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimers), p53 stress protein, caspase-3 in human skin biopsies that have been either un-exposed or UV-exposed in absence and in presence of a sunscreen. |
UV-exposure induces DNA damage, such as CPD's. The protein p53 is also activated. When too many DNA damages occur, the cell enters the apoptotic cascade process -among others caspase-3 gets activated-, which leads to cell death, and prevents transformation into a carcinogenic cell.
