Whitening and pigmentation

Agents acting on skin pigmentation processes can be characterized by in vitro testing using melanocytes (human or B16) in monolayer or reconstituted human epidermis containing melanocytes.

The activity of substances or formulations acting on skin whitening and pigmentation can be evaluated by monitoring tyrosinase activity, by the measurement of the melanin content, by histology (Fontana/Masson staining) or by specific immuno-labeling (tyrosinase, MART-1, etc.).
