Founded in early 2005, StratiCELL is a leading company assisting the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and chemical industries to the safety and efficacy evaluation of their actives and products by means of in vitro models and methods in a GLP-compliant environment.
StratiCELL is a skin model manufacturer and a project-driven services provider for in vitro testing, with a particular emphasis on testing of skin care actives and products
Straticell In Vitro Epidermis
The possibility of engineering in vitro skin tissues has raised new opportunities to assess the safety and activity of skin care ingredients and products in vitro.
StratiCELL has developed two proprietary in vitro skin models, the StratiCELL® reconstituted human epidermis with and without pigmentation; merely composed of normal human keratinocytes cultured in a well-defined service-free medium on a polycarbonate filter at the air liquid interface.

These models show high similarity with the in vivo human epidermis; as the various layers of the differentiated skin are present, as well as the protective stratum corneum.
The reproducibility of each batch is checked by histological analysis. The general organization and the stratification of the tissue, the basal layer and the thickness of the stratum corneum are parameters that are routinely verified. A viability test of the reconstituted tissue is also performed under a routine quality control.
The reconstituted epidermis is available in two different sizes (0.63 cm2 and 4 cm2).
Their quality and high reproducibility make them ideal for use as alternative in vitro models to animal testing.

Applications of the StratiCELL® Reconstituted Human Epidermis
StratiCELL produces and sells two standard in vitro skin models:
- StratiCELL® Reconstituted Human Epidermis (EPI/001) and
- StratiCELL® Reconstituted Pigmented Epidermis (MEL/001)
In addition, StratiCELL offers in vitro epidermis reconstituted from young and old donors, as well as psoriatic & atopic dermatitis epidermis donors.
These models can be applied for
- Testing skin care substances or products after topical or systemic treatment
- Testing penetration and absorption of topically applied skin care substances or products
- Dermal toxicity testing (skin irritation, corrosion,...) for preliminary toxicity studies
- Melanogenesis / depigmentation studies (MEL/001)
